7 Tricks to Keep Kids Happy and Cooperative During Photos
From snack strategies to the secret power of silly games, these tried-and-true tips from photographers will save your session.
The Truth About Kids and Photo Sessions
Here is the secret every family photographer knows: the best kid photos come when children forget they are being photographed. Stiff poses and forced smiles are never the goal. Movement, play, and genuine laughter are.
1. Time It Around Their Schedule
This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Schedule the session:
- After nap time (not before or during)
- Not too close to mealtime — a hungry toddler is nobody's friend
- On a day without other big events — overstimulated kids crash fast
2. Bring the Right Snacks
Pack small, non-messy snacks in a bag that stays out of sight until needed:
- Goldfish crackers, dry cereal, or fruit snacks
- A water bottle or sippy cup
- Avoid: chocolate, berries, popsicles, or anything that stains
Think of snacks as a secret weapon, not a meal. A small handful between setups works wonders.
3. Let Them Run First
Arrive five minutes early and let kids burn off energy before the session starts. Let them run, spin, explore the area. A tired-out toddler is actually more cooperative than a freshly-charged one.
4. Play Games, Not Poses
The best photographers use movement prompts instead of static poses:
- "Run to Daddy as fast as you can!"
- "Who can do the silliest dance?"
- "Whisper a secret in Mommy's ear"
- "Ready, set... TICKLE!"
These create genuine expressions and natural body language.
5. Bring a Comfort Item
For younger kids, a favorite stuffed animal or blanket can be a lifesaver. A good photographer knows how to shoot around it or use it as a sweet prop.
6. Don't Stress (They Can Feel It)
Kids are emotional mirrors. If you are tense, they will be tense. If you are laughing and relaxed, they will follow. Give yourself permission for things to be imperfect — those are often the best shots.
7. Bribery Is Totally Fine
Promise a trip to the ice cream shop or playground afterward. There, we said it. It works, and no one will judge you.
